Lead UX Designer

Background

Disney Movies Anywhere was a cross-platform product where Guests could browse, buy and watch their collection of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars titles. By connecting their Disney account to various providers, iTunes, Google Play, VUDU, Amazon Video, Microsoft Movies & TV, and Fios by Verizon, their collection was available in Disney Movies Anywhere as well as in each of the connected providers libraries, regardless of which provider they originally purchased the title from. The Disney Movies Anywhere app was available on iOS, Android, Roku, Xbox360, and select Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.

Disney Movies Anywhere

The Challenge

Disney Movies Anywhere had a long and complicated onboarding process. There were many Guests that did not understand why they should use Disney Movies Anywhere over using a provider directly.

My Role

My role as the lead UX designer was to work with product and engineering to define how we could improve the onboarding process to increase user engagement. We wanted to streamline and simplify the onboarding to increase account registrations and code redemptions while improving the understanding of the product’s offerings.

The Approach

  • Gather insights through research
  • Map improved user flows
  • Design a prototype to test with users

Gathering Insights

The Discovery

Research showed that Guests interacted with Disney Movies Anywhere either because they had movies already in a provider collection or they had a code from a physical copy they wanted to redeem. Most guests initially only connected one provider account.

Key Findings:

  • Existing tour was too long
  • Users didn’t retain the content presented in the tour
  • Users did not understand the benefit of using Disney Movies Anywhere over existing services
  • Lack of Disney magic

Design and Testing

Goals

Based on the research insights our goals were to show the benefit of Disney Movies Anywhere by helping the Guest either to connect a provider account or redeem a digital copy with a code while including a little Disney magic.

Sketches and Userflows

Research showed that the majority of Guests either came to Disney Movies Anywhere to sign up with their primary provider or that they received a redemption code in a physical copy of a movie and were signing up to redeem their digital copy. Working with the team I created improved user flows that reduced the number of screens and pain points to signing up.

Wireframes and Prototypes

After initial sketches and user flows, I created wireframes and a prototype for feedback and consensus from stakeholders, then for  usability testing with participants in the Disney Interactive Lab.

Results

With these learnings from usability testing we simplified the onboarding process and added a touch of Disney magic. The improved experience helped the app to break records for the number of downloads, registrations and provider connections.
