The Challenge

The AT&T TV experience needed to incorporate a consistent scalable second screen watching experience across casting technologies.

My Role

My role as Senior UX designer was to work with the team to define how we could create a casting experience that was consistent whether it was Airplay or Chromecast. We were looking for something that would scale to potentially add additional features with AT&T hardware.

Approach

  • Gather insights through competitive research
  • Map user flows
  • Designs and specifications

Gathering Insights

The Discovery

Initial implementations of AirPlay and Chromecast completely separated the process to connect to devices and the playback experiences. Through competitive research I found that several competitors were combining the Chromecast and Airplay connections and experiences.

Goals

After reviewing competitor experiences for Chromecast and Airplay our goals were to combine and streamline the casting experience across receiver types. This would help the user to have a consistent experience across casting and enable us to more easily add features using AT&T hardware.

User Flows and Wireframes

Working with the team I created improved user flows that reduced the number of screens to connect devices and cast content. Wireframes further defined the patterns for connecting and disconnecting senders from receivers. All available receiver types were grouped together in one connection menu accessed by one icon and casting controllers were unified to be the same across Airplay and Chromecast.

Results

Using the Casting Controller users can control their cast while browsing throughout the app as well as when the app is running in the background. The improved Casting experience was streamlined for both Chromecast and Airplay allowing for similar Receiver connection and Casting Controller experiences.
